In the town of Middleton, a car crash happens at 11:14 pm. The film tells five separate, but converging, stories that lead up to the crash and explores the simple truth that choices have consequences.

When did all films become at least two hours long? Sometimes, that’s just a little too long. This crime drama, with touches of dark humour, is a compact one and a half hours. An ensemble cast create an ensemble of characters: a hopeless drink driver, a group of friends out joyriding, a worried father, two convenience store clerks and Cheri who trying to raise cash for an abortion. Their stories turn out to be more entwined than first appears. 11:14 is an intriguing little thriller and you’re not quite sure where you’re going until the last fifteen minutes or so. The night-time setting gives every scene a sense of unease. Is the rest of Middleton asleep whilst this random collection of misfits mess up their own lives and those of others?

The following year, in 2004, Swank won the best actress Oscar for her role in Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby. She had previously won an Oscar for Boys Don’t Cry (1999), early in her career, when she was paid the grand sum of $3,000 for her efforts.
