Has there been a more intimidating screen villain than Max Cady, played by Robert Mitchum? Cady, after eight years in prison, returns to absolutely terrorise small-town lawyer, Sam Bowden’s, family. Forget about the 1991 remake with De Niro, this has way more menace. Violence is hinted at rather than depicted. Gregory Peck is Bowden but it’s Mitchum who holds your attention.
