As Julie contemplates leaving her husband, she plays some of their old records, reminding her of their shared joys and sorrows throughout their courtship, marriage and ongoing desire for a child.
This is a love story that accepts that life is not always a bed of roses and, sometimes, it just stinks. It touches on career, pregnancy, friendship, divorce, death and adoption. Yes, acting styles have changed and it’s in black and white but you’ll still identify with this very human couple. It could be one to watch on a wet Sunday afternoon. Be prepared to wipe away a tear.
This role handed Cary Grant the first of his two Academy Award nominations. He only ever received an honorary Oscar in 1970. Astounding, considering his talent and the films he appeared in. Irene Dunne fared even worse by receiving five nominations from 1931 to 1949 and not winning one.
Director: George Stevens
