Henry Brougham, an Episcopal Bishop is struggling to build an elaborate new cathedral whilst trying to meet the needs of his congregation and, more importantly, be available to his family. Then Dudley, a rather dashing angel comes into the family’s lives. Everyone loves him, except for Henry who believes that Dudley is trying to replace him, at work and at home. Need an alternative to the Christmas classic, It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)? This is it.

There is something about Christmas that enables contemporary audiences to tolerate black and white classics, as long as the film oozes yuletide feel goodness. The Bishops’ Wife is one of these films. Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven may not mean quite so much to so many in the 21st Century but these three were at the top of the film star Christmas tree in 1947. Cary Grant brings his debonair persona to Dudley and Niven does an excellent job as the rather humourless bishop who has lost his way. Initially, the male leads had been cast the other way round until director, Koster, realised that each was suited to the other role.
